Japan’s Subculture Research Center

Japan Subculture Research Center is focussed on the Japanese underworld, but covers all of Japanese culture. It’s staffed by several journalists, researchers, and does pay a nominal fee for contributions. The blog as a policy only reviews books, movies, and Japan related events that they recommend—no negative reviews.

This owner of this blog is Jake Adelstein, the only American journalist ever to have been admitted to the insular Tokyo Metropolitan Police Press Club. He also is the author of the book “Tokyo Vice”, which gives a unique, firsthand, revelatory look at Japanese culture from the underbelly up.

Jake Adelstein is regular writer for the Atlantic Wire and The Daily Beast/Newsweek.

  1. An excellent blog, well researched articles and loads of controversies about the other side of Japan. Although Japan’s underworld is inaccessible for most of us, it is worth to keep up a critical attitude towards the widespread ignorance of wrong doings in Japan.
